The rehabilitation and reconstruction of the N2 at the Belstone and Breidbach intersections was designed GIBB (Pty) Ltd and construction supervised by Mariswe (Pty) Ltd and has been contracted to WBHO Construction (Pty) Ltd for construction. The project has an estimated value of R438 million (including VAT) for completion over a period of 30 months.  



These upgrades are implemented as part of SANRAL’s comprehensive plan to enhance the quality of roads between Gqeberha and Qonce, aimed at improving safety and travel times, as well as promoting economic growth. SANRAL’s improvements to this stretch of the N2 is at an advanced stage, with roadworks between Qonce and Makhanda also under way. 



Construction commenced on 14 September 2021 and the project is anticipated to be completed by 13 June 2024. The project is currently at the 71% completion mark. 



The scope of the upgrades includes the construction of new interchanges at the Belstone and Breidbach intersections, which will include reinforced concrete structures with the necessary road works. 



This contract includes construction of a new pedestrian underpass at the Belstone interchange, construction of a new traffic circle at the corner of MR0690 and MR0688, construction of a new lane, lane widening, road repairs, new surfacing and upgrading of the stormwater infrastructure along MR0688. Pedestrian, taxi and bus facilities along the route will be formalised. 



Furthermore, two community development projects are being implemented alongside this project. These are the upgrading of community roads at the Tshatshu and KwaRhayi villages, which are both under construction.
