"It takes us long to respond to road damage issues and we saw this as a solution to our problem," Mayor Mandla Zondi told 'The Witness'.

uMshwathi Municipality has bought its own construction vehicles in an effort to respond more hastily to issues regarding road infrastructure.

“It takes us long to respond to road damage issues and we saw this as a solution to our problem,” Mayor Mandla Zondi told The Witness.

“Since 2021, we have been saving a small portion of our budget,” he said.

“We started by purchasing a tractor loader backhoe (TLB) and noticed that even though it is of great assistance, it also loses power quickly. We then bought a truck and tipper truck. Now we have bought a grader,” said Zondi. Zondi added that the municipality has 14 wards, three of which have tarred access roads.

The rest of the wards have gravel roads. I won’t be able to say where we are going to start, as we are going to be controlled by where the major need is.

“The most important thing is to ensure that people get proper access to their homes. People need to be able to move from one point to another without any disruptions.”

He added: “We have spent more than R6 million. We want to urge residents to be patient as we are in the process of repairing roads.”
