Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport Planning, Roads and Stormwater Cllr Andile Mngwevu has officially handed over a new bridge – for use by pedestrians and motorists in Pomona. The handover took place on Thursday, 3 August 2023.

The City of Ekurhuleni has not only rebuilt the bridge but also rehabilitated the stream going through the bridge after residents complained of flooding, which made crossing the bridge almost impossible after heavy rains.

“When the community raises issues we listen. We may not be able to resolve all issues at the same time, but you can be rest assured that when the resources become available, the work shall get done,” said MMC Mngwevu when opening the bridge.

The project entailed the construction of the bridge at Glapina Avenue over the stream to connect residents and the removal of alien vegetation in the stream to improve the water flow. The work also included the installation of gabions to stabilise the stream’s bed and banks and stop channel erosion.

Heidi Oosthuizen, a resident in the area, said he was delighted with the quality of work and the fact that they will no longer experience flooding during rainy seasons.
