Gauteng is South Africa’s mall capital, and two developments are currently set to open this year.

Although Gauteng is the smallest province in the country and houses 27% of the population, its 1,800 monitored malls mean that it has 50% of the nation’s shopping centres stops and 32% of total mall visit time.

This is according to Lightstone, which also noted that Gauteng has 13 of the country’s 20 most visited malls each month, with Mall of Africa in Midrand being the busiest mall in the country.

Despite the plethora of malls currently in the province, there are still many developments for the province.

Consultant Retail Network Services is currently involved in several retail developments, including the Newmarket Lifestyle Centre and Lenz Quarter.

Newmarket Lifestyle is a new 30,000 sqm centre planned for the mixed-use Newmarket Precinct.

The precinct was built on the old Newmarket Racecourse and already houses the 42,000 sqm Mall at Newmarket and a 19,000 sqm Makro, whilst the Netcare Alberton Union Hospital and Netcare Alberton Clinton Hospital are being relocated to the precinct into the new Netcare Alberton Hospital under construction.

“The continuous success of the Newmarket Precinct is now calling for the addition of the some 30,000 sqm Newmarket Lifestyle Centre, which will, amongst others, include large speciality stores which are not currently represented in the node, making the Newmarket Precinct a one-stop destination for the larger Alberton and Ekurhuleni areas,” Retail Network Services CEO Gavin Tagg said.

In addition, the 12,000 sqm Lenz Quarter is launching in Lenasia, South Johannesburg.

The development is set to have 30 shops, with Checkers, Woolworths and Dis-Chem among the tenants already listed.
