The assessment follows the National Treasury approval of the rollover of the Municipal Disaster Grant of R1, 6 billion, which is set to impact service delivery projects.

eThekwini mayor, Cllr Mxolisi Kaunda has commended the significant progress made on road and sewer infrastructure reconstruction during an oversight visit to KwaMashu’s C Section, recently.

The reconstruction work is in response to damage incurred during the 2022 flood disaster. Mayor Kaunda, accompanied by councillors and municipal officials, conducted an assessment of a water canal that is currently under construction that will help to prevent damage to homes near the flood-prone area.

The assessment follows the National Treasury approval of the rollover of the Municipal Disaster Grant of R1, 6 billion, which is set to impact service delivery projects.

“As part of our flood disaster rebuilding process, we have initiated projects in response to areas affected by the April 2022 floods. Here in KwaMashu C Section, we are building a water canal, which will channel water straight into the river. This project is expected to be completed by June 2024,” said Mayor Kaunda.

The water canal will be constructed in phases and has also contributed to job creation in the community.

Speaking of the Municipal Disaster Grant roll-over approval by the National Treasury, Mayor Kaunda said major projects will be completed by June 2024.

“Most of the projects have been completed already with more than 154 roads that have been repaired and more than 27 bridges that have been fixed. We anticipate that through this grant, more than 500 projects will be implemented like roads, stormwater systems and bridges. This funding is a testament to the collaborative efforts at both local and national government to uplift communities affected by natural disasters,” he explained.

The announcement by Mayor Kaunda was met with applause from community members.

They welcomed the plan to rebuild infrastructure damaged during the recent floods and lauded the service delivery by the city.
