The Brixton Social Cluster is set to transform Ward 58 into a vibrant community hub, with significant progress made on new facilities, including a library and public square.

The construction of the Brixton Social Cluster is advancing as part of the City of Johannesburg’s commitment to enhancing community infrastructure in Ward 58 and its surrounding areas.

This initiative aims to foster a vibrant urban environment that promotes social cohesion while providing essential spaces for residents to live, work, and play.

According to JDA CEO Themba Mathibe, phase two of the construction, being implemented by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), includes the development of several key facilities: a public square, a new library, a coffee shop, improved green open spaces, a children’s play area, and renovations to the existing swimming pool.

“The project’s first phase was completed in 2020, which involved establishing a multi-purpose recreation centre and upgrading sports fields, culminating in an official opening in September 2021,” said Mathibe.

Current Progress

As of now, the Brixton Social Cluster project’ phase two is reported to be 55% complete. The JDA has successfully addressed previous challenges related to the termination of the contractor, Nkomaba Trading and Projects, allowing construction to proceed without further delays, according to Mathibe.

He said the new library, which replaces the former Brixton library, will be a single-storey building with a floor area of 1 840m².

It is designed to feature both general and specialised information resource spaces, along with a study centre, effectively utilising the site’s downward slope with upper and lower ground levels.

Renovations and New Facilities

The Brixton Swimming Pool, originally built in 1938, is also undergoing significant renovations to maintain its historical value.

“Upgrades include waterproofing, new access features, and improvements to the changing facilities, ensuring that the pool continues to serve as a valuable community asset.”

Mathibe said the public square was designed to be a safe and well-lit gathering area for residents. “Additionally, the new art gallery and coffee house, spanning 320m², will offer multiple entrances and an outdoor sitting area, enhancing the community’s social and cultural offerings.”

Furthermore, he reported that the playground area would see substantial improvements, featuring a new 60m² ablution facility, walkways, safety surfaces, and new playground equipment to create a family-friendly environment.

Commitment to Community Development

Mathibe emphasised that the JDA was committed to transforming the Brixton Social Cluster from its previously underdeveloped state into a sustainable social hub that meets the diverse needs of the community.
