The eThekwini Municipality has set out the timeframe for when Beaconsfield Road in Westville North will be fixed, after it was damaged in 2021.
THE work to fix the damage caused by the 2021 floods on Beaconsfield Road in Westville North is expected to begin by late February or early March. This comes after residents complained and highlighted how hazardous it has become.
The Highway Mail reported that a section of the road has sunk and it continues to cave in, making it increasingly unstable and posing significant dangers to both motorists and pedestrians.
Affected residents told the Highway Mail that the situation was a severe safety hazard and urged the municipality to intervene.
“At this rate, the road will eventually be no more, and we won’t be able to go to work, which means no income. We are expected to pay rates and keep up to date, yet this repair has been overdue since 2021. Is that fair?” the residents questioned.
EThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the City is aware of the damage.
“The design and documentation process has been completed; however, the Coastal, Stormwater & Catchment Management Department is awaiting funding approval before work can commence. The necessary funds have been identified and will become available once the mid-term adjustment budget is approved by Council in February.
“We anticipate that a contractor will be on site by late February or early March, with the repairs expected to be completed within two months. Currently, the Roads & Stormwater Maintenance Department has barricaded the area. Once construction begins, the appointed contractor will be responsible for site maintenance and safety,” she said.
