The R66-million-rand Bophelong clinic in Doornkop is expected to inject new life into the Region C community following its official opening by the Executive Mayor, Cllr Thapelo Amad. The primary healthcare facility will offer a full basket of high-quality healthcare services to an ever-increasing population of Region C, which has been experiencing a growing demand for primary healthcare services. The Bophelong Clinic is a state-of-the-art facility with 18 consulting rooms and offers a full range of primary healthcare services such as family planning, vaccination, and HIV/TB treatment.

The clinic was built according to National Core Standards, Ideal Clinic, and occupational Health and Safety standards.
It also has a staff complement of 22 employees, two sessional doctors, one social worker, two environmental health practitioners, and 10 ward-based outreach teams.

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) managed the construction of the newly built facility on behalf of the City’s Health and Social Development Department, with Nkomamba Trading and Projects as the appointed contractor.

During the opening ceremony, Mayor Amad encouraged the community to participate actively in the City’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) consultations.

He engaged with community members who were disgruntled and enraged by unrelated service delivery shortfalls, reassuring them that the municipality is committed to improving their living conditions.

"There can never be us without you. In the same principle, we encourage you to show up at this year's IDP meetings to express your service delivery issues accordingly. Look out for the meeting details on social media and on the City’s website," he said.

The clinic’s opening was attended by the MMC for Health and Social Department, Cllr Makhafola, and the City Manager, Floyd Brink among other dignitaries.

It was also attended by dozens of community members who welcomed guests with song and dance, ululating and chanting cultural slogans as the leadership of the municipality inspected the facility during a walkabout.

Ward Councillor, Bheki Mgaga, urged the community to take pride in the facility and protect it from vandalism.

The Bophelong Clinic will undoubtedly go a long way in addressing the healthcare needs of the community and promote their overall wellbeing, said MMC Makhafola, adding that she’d begin discussions with municipal officials to have the facility operate 24/7.
