eThekwini Municipality has started a project to rebuild the retaining wall at Brighton Beach that was washed away during heavy rains two years ago.

THE Brighton Beach promenade, that was severely damaged during the heavy rains in 2022, is now getting a new look after eThekwini Municipality began to rebuild the retaining wall.

The project started early in April this year and it is expected to be completed by the end of October. Engineer and overseer of the project, Sanele Nkala said their first priority is to build a strong retaining wall to support the dune bank.

He said the material that is being used at the foundation level is designed to prevent further soil erosion. It’s essential for the sustainability of the promenade. As the work progresses, Brighton Beach has begun to take a new shape.

In addition to this, trees will be planted along the beach to ensure that the promenade retains its beauty and attract visitors. Following the heavy rains that demolished some parts of the old retaining wall, fishermen, who have been using the promenade for fishing purposes, were left stranded after the slab attached to the retaining wall was washed away.

The community liaison officer for the project, Happiness Ngwane said the construction of the fishermen’s slab has been completed.

The chairperson of the local fishermen’s association Just Angling Durban, Aveshin Moodley said the newly constructed fishermen slab will enable the fishing community to use the promenade without any restrictions.
