The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has achieved a significant milestone in Phase Two of the Brixton Social Cluster construction with the successful completion of a major roof installation. This accomplishment paves the way for finalising all internal finishes, keeping the project on track for completion by the end of Quarter Two, 2025.
As part of the City of Johannesburg's strategy to expand and improve social infrastructure, the JDA has been implementing Phase Two of the Brixton Social Cluster development.
The project aims to transform the precinct into a vibrant community hub by introducing a new public square, a modernized library, an upgraded swimming pool, a children's play area, green open spaces, and a coffee shop.
The redevelopment of the Brixton Library is a core component of the project. The old library has made way for a new, modern 1,840m² single-storey facility designed to accommodate the increasing number of users, including university students and schoolchildren from nearby institutions such as Piet van Vuuren Primary School, Jim Fouché Primary School, EP Baumann Primary School, and Vorentoe High School.
The library will feature general and specialised information resource spaces, a study centre, and improved accessibility. The ground floor will be divided into upper and lower levels, adapting to the natural slope of the site. The scope of work includes construction, signage, and furnishing of the facility.
Upgraded pool to enhance community use
The Brixton Swimming Pool, a historic facility constructed in 1938, is being upgraded to better serve the community. The pool is a vital recreational space, particularly during school holidays when it accommodates up to 200 children. Several surrounding schools also rely on the facility for swimming activities.
The renovation is being conducted in line with heritage preservation guidelines and includes waterproofing the roof slab, installing a new glass turnstile entrance, upgrading changing room facilities, and improving access for differently abled individuals. More enhancements include refurbishing the storerooms for caretaker units and upgrading flooring, walls, doors, and windows.
The Brixton Social Cluster will feature a well-lit, safe public square designed as a gathering space for the local community. It will be complemented by a 320m² art gallery and coffeehouse, providing cultural and social engagement opportunities. The facility will have three entrances, linking it directly to the public square, an outdoor seating area, and a kitchen service section.
The playground area will receive a 60m² ablution facility, new walkways, paving, a cycle track, landscaped green spaces, modern playground equipment, drinking fountains, and outdoor furniture.
Phase One of the Brixton Social Cluster, completed in 2020 and officially opened in September 2021, introduced a new multi-purpose recreation centre, upgraded sports fields, combi-courts, parking, landscaping, lighting, fencing, and artwork. With Phase Two progressing steadily, the JDA remains committed to delivering high-quality infrastructure that enhances community engagement and improves the quality of life for residents.
The completion of the major roof installation is a crucial milestone, bringing the project closer to realisation. The JDA looks forward to finalizing construction and officially unveiling the upgraded Brixton Social Cluster, reinforcing the City of Johannesburg's vision for inclusive and accessible public spaces.
JDA CEO Themba Mathibe expressed his enthusiasm for the progress, stating: “This milestone underscores our dedication to delivering impactful infrastructure that enhances the lives of Johannesburg residents. The Brixton Social Cluster is a testament to our commitment to creating well-designed, accessible, and inclusive community spaces."
