After months of hazardous driving conditions, Johannesburg Roads Agency is tackling the pothole issue on Nola Avenue, with repairs underway.

After months of frustration for drivers on Nola Avenue in Buccleuch, the long-standing issue of potholes has finally being addressed.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) teams are currently on the ground (February 1), working to repair the potholes that have made the avenue a nightmare for motorists, with some potholes so large that drivers were forced to swerve dangerously to avoid damaging their tyres.

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, shared that they had reported the potholes multiple times for months before finally seeing action.

According to Makhosi Ndaba, acting head of department for regional operations at JRA, the teams are now actively repairing potholes along Nola Avenue. “JRA is currently working on Nola Avenue and is addressing these specific potholes. We are committed to ensuring that road users experience safer conditions on this road.”

When asked about the delay in repairs, Ndaba explained that inclement weather, particularly the ongoing rainy season, has contributed significantly to the backlog. “The repair of potholes requires the road surface to be completely dry, which has been difficult to achieve with the increased number of rainy days.”

Ndaba added that the festive season saw JRA teams operating with limited staff, due to year-end recess. “Despite these setbacks, JRA has been scheduling daily repairs across various regions, working to tackle the growing backlog of road defects.”

He also confirmed that JRA had previously received reports about the potholes on Nola Avenue, which had led to the current efforts. “We are aware that these potholes have been a long-standing issue and are grateful for the residents who reported them. Our teams are now focused on these areas to resolve the situation.”

Looking ahead, Ndaba assured residents that measures are in place to speed up the response to future pothole reports. “JRA teams are on the ground every weekday addressing road defects across all seven regions of the city. We are committed to responding to reports promptly, and we urge residents to continue notifying us about any road issues.”

He pointed out that, as for other potholes in the Buccleuch area, repairs are underway on various streets. However, specific timelines for each road were not available at the time.
