When asked if the delays would affect the budget, the municipality confirmed that the delay has not increased costs and the project remains within its original financial framework.

The construction of the Rockdale Thusong Service Centre has been delayed again due to the rain.

The municipality said the initial completion date of the centre was last December and was then moved to February.

The municipality told the Middelburg Observer that phase one of the project will be completed in April, and phase two will be completed in the new 2025/2026 financial year.

Phase one will include a community hall, a library, and a pay point for municipal services. Phase two will be a fire station.

When asked if the delays would affect the budget, the municipality confirmed that the delay has not increased costs and the project remains within its original financial framework.

The need for the multi-purpose centre came from the growing community in the area. The centre will also cater to residents living in rural areas, and will offer easy access to essential services while reducing the need for residents to travel to the civic centre in the CBD.

When finished, the municipality’s Municipal Building Services Department will oversee the centre’s maintenance.

On their Facebook page, the municipality said 28 residents had been employed during the construction.

At least 15 local subcontractors were also hired, with more employment opportunities expected after the completion of the project.
