Cape Town marked a significant milestone yesterday with the groundbreaking ceremony for the Masiphumelele Gateway Market, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The event, attended by Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Alderman James Vos, mayoral committee member for Economic Growth, set the stage for an ambitious project that promises to reshape the local economy and improve the lives of informal traders in Masiphumelele.
Located along the bustling Kommetjie Road, the new market aims to enhance the dignity, cleanliness and safety of informal trading in the area.
With 66 dedicated trading spaces, the market will feature a variety of facilities, including kiosks, a food preparation area, an office block, and modern ablution facilities.
In his remarks during the ceremony, Mayor Hill-Lewis expressed excitement for the positive impact the market will have on the community.
‘The Masiphumelele Gateway Market will bring a more dignified and clean trading space for this community and for the informal traders. It will also help spur economic opportunities in the area,’ Hill-Lewis stated.
He also emphasised the City’s commitment to becoming a global leader in both tourism and community care, highlighting the significance of the project for Masiphumelele’s future.
The market’s development is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to provide business-friendly, accessible environments for local entrepreneurs, ensuring that trading locations meet the needs of both vendors and customers.
Alderman Vos outlined the project’s extensive benefits, stating, ‘Our aim is to take into account the particular needs of the traders and consumers who will use the site.’
The Gateway Market will not only provide a safer and more organised space for trading but will also contribute to broader community development.
The project is expected to reduce congestion on nearby pavements, enhance public safety, and stimulate job creation. Local residents will be employed during the construction phase, further strengthening the community’s connection to the project.
The market’s launch follows the approval of the Masiphumelele Trading Plan, which underwent a comprehensive public participation process.
In addition, the City has recently approved a 30% reduction in informal trading tariffs for the 2024/2025 financial year, reinforcing its support for small businesses.
As the construction progresses, the Masiphumelele Gateway Market stands as a beacon of hope for informal traders, offering them a professional, safe, and supportive environment to thrive in.
The new market not only promises economic growth but also reinforces the City’s commitment to improving the lives of its residents.
The project is expected to drive significant improvements in the Masiphumelele area, creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs and enhancing the overall quality of life for the community.
