The project, which marks a new chapter for the Edendale area, was launched in June 2024, and is expected to be completed by June this year.
Edendale residents are frustrated at the construction delays to the Old Edendale Road upgrade, pleading with the municipality to speed up the process as their cars suffer damage almost daily.
The project, which marks a new chapter for the Edendale area, was launched in June 2024, and is expected to be completed by June this year.
However, delays in the construction schedule have left the road in a bad condition, with motorists expressing concern about the damage the unpaved road is doing to their cars.
“We appeal to the municipality to speed up the process. These stones that they have put on the road are damaging cars,” said business owner Joseph Adane.
He added that his staff are forever cleaning dust from his shop. Nkosi Mthembu said his brother has to call in at a garage to check his tyre pressure before going to work each day as his car constantly has slow punctures.
“Our laundry, which we hang outside gets dirty in a short space of time. We then have to wash at night which is also a risk since clothes get stolen in this area.”
Zethembe Ngcobo, also complained about car damage. “They should have started with the repairs in a small portion and, once completed, move to another,” said Ngcobo.
Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Ntobeko Mkhize said the project is on track for completion, despite encountering some delays.
“The Old Edendale Road project is more than a typical road repair. It includes: the upgrading of pavement layer works, creating a safer and smoother driving experience. Installation of modern street lighting, enhancing safety for pedestrians and motorists,” said Mkhize, adding that it includes development of sidewalks for improved accessibility.
“Contractors will also be installing effective stormwater management systems, including two culverts, to reduce flooding and water damage, along with thoughtful landscaping to beautify the area and complement the town centre’s development.”
Mkhize said delays had been caused by temporary work stoppages to address participation concerns from business forums and weather disruptions between November and December last year.
“The scheduled construction recess in late 2024 (December to January holidays) [added to the delays],” she added.
Adjustments [have been made] to ensure the inclusion of local SMMEs [and] the project is set to commence in February
“These challenges are being tackled head-on, with the municipality remaining focused on delivering a quality infrastructure project that meets the needs of residents.”
Worth R54 million, the initiative also involves paving the way for the Edendale Town Centre Development, a key driver of economic growth and community upliftment in the region.
