Construction of the bridge is in process with the official opening being on December 7.
The reconstruction process of the Hendrik Potgieter Road bridge is well underway and is set for the official opening on December 7.
Last year, heavy rains caused damage to a storm channel, which led to the closure of the road and earlier this year, the bridge was demolished.
According to a media statement by DA spokesperson Evert Du Plessis released on October 6, the construction of the bridge is progressing well, and residents can expect the work to be completed by the end of November and has been confirmed by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport.
According to the communications director for the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, Melitah Madiba, contractors are finalising the last layer and then commencing with primer and black top on November 17.
“Primer and black top will take 10 days, and the road is done,” she said.
The reconstruction of this bridge after heavy rains again highlights the need for proper and regular maintenance on all provincial roads.
The rehabilitation project went well despite stoppages due to rain.
The reconstruction project encompassed various phases, including the preparation of the bridge slab, concrete placing, earth backfilling, resurfacing, floods, and erosion management, and the completion of cut-off walls and water channelling wing walls.
“We thank the community and businesses around the area for their patience and understanding. We look forward to the opening of the road,” Melitha said.
