CONSTRUCTION on the Hull Street housing project, which had been on hold for the past eight months due to administrative problems, is set to resume next month.

A spokesperson for the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs, Babalwa Mzambo, confirmed that the project initially began in July 2022.

She explained that the previous principal contractor, Amandla Building and Construction, had halted civil works due to contractual disputes with the South Africa Swedish International Housing Company (SASIHC).

“A new contractor was appointed this week and the site handover took place, facilitated by the Social Housing Regulatory Authority in collaboration with the SASIHC,” she said.

Mzambo added that the new contractor, Moago Constructions, would commence on-site work in December.

“They will focus on site establishment, and the project is anticipated to last between eight and nine months, with completion expected by the end of October 2025.”

“The first phase of the Hull Street project is set to deliver 372 units. This social housing initiative aims to alleviate the housing backlog in our Province. Additionally, it seeks to tackle unemployment by dedicating 30 percent of the project value to hiring local labourers and subcontractors,” Mzambo noted.
