City entities met in Alexandra this week, where they let their actions speak on London Road.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) led a team of stakeholders in a Region E clean-up campaign in Alex on February 6.

JRA was joined by Pikitup, Citizen Relationship and Urban Management initiative, and Augmented Field Services (AFS) on a campaign that focused on cleaning up the area around 8th Avenue and Vincent Tshabalala Road.

While JRA conducted deep road patching operations, Pikitup removed rubbish from illegal dumping and AFS cleared weeds.

JRA head of regional operations Khaya Gqibitole said active citizenry was needed in Alex, encouraging community members to take care of the infrastructure that served their community’s needs.

“People of Alex also need to protect JRA employees by reporting criminal elements to law enforcement agencies,” Gqibitole said. “There have been frequent incidents where JRA staff were mugged of their belongings in the Alex area.”

Gqibitole said the work carried out by the agency formed part of their routine maintenance that was catered for by the Opex budget, not to be confused with the Capex budget of R10m for resurfacing roads.

“The actual costs of the operation today will be determined after the work is done.”
