The LCF urged Mayor Sifiso Mngemezulu and municipal manager Malose Lamola to prioritise maintaining infrastructure.
The Lekwa Community Forum (LCF) is concerned about the deteriorating roads in Lekwa. The party issued a statement saying its LCF administration prioritised rehabilitating roads and engaged stakeholders for support because the internal funding is insufficient to support this work.
Their main complaint is that roads have deteriorated because there has been no maintenance. According to the statement, the municipality has failed to address stormwater drain issues in critical areas and would be unable to move on to the third phase of road development, which would have tackled many streets in the Sakhile area.
“It is disheartening to see traffic lights in the town centre malfunctioning and replaced by stop signs. No working traffic lights create safety hazards for motorists and pedestrians,” said Sello Tsotetsi, the LCF spokesperson.
The LCF urged Mayor Sifiso Mngemezulu and municipal manager Malose Lamola to prioritise maintaining infrastructure. They insist on immediate action for roads in residential areas to ensure no further deterioration.
“Filling potholes with gravel is not a sustainable solution. We call to empower the municipal roads department with adequate resources and manpower to effectively address the deteriorating roads,” said Tsotetsi.
According to Lubabalo Majenge, spokesperson for the Lekwa Local Municipality, they made several attempts to improve roads since November.
This includes rehabilitating Vry Street, which is in progress, using hot tar to patch several residential roads and the main road to Thuthukani and Morgenzon, and gravelling 2.1km of dust roads in Extn 8.
“The municipality has launched the Khubunyaluthuli programme, with which the Mpumalanga Public Works and the Gert Sibande District Municipality share road maintenance resources to deal with road challenges,” explained Majenge.
Operation Valazonke, an emergency road repairs programme, was launched by the National Department of Transport.
According to Majenge, a budget was set aside to rehabilitate Hlongwane Drive in Sakhile.
The roads in Lekwa are rapidly deteriorating.
