Roads MEC Ernest Rachoene leads a pothole patching programme on the D4 road from N1 to Elim, addressing key maintenance issues in Vhembe.

LIMPOPO – Last Monday, Roads MEC Ernest Rachoene rolled up his sleeves and got to work on a pothole patching and road maintenance programme along the D4, stretching from N1 to Elim, to accelerate service delivery in Vhembe.

Joined by Vhembe Mayor Freda Nkondo, Louis Trichardt Mayor Dorcus Mboyi and senior officials from both Roads and Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL), Rachoene led a team focused on repairing one of the region’s most crucial and damaged routes.

The D4 serves as an important link, connecting Elim to the N1 and offering a shortcut to Malamulele, however, the road has long been plagued by potholes, which the MEC acknowledged as a pressing issue for locals and travellers alike.

The pothole patching programme is part of a broader effort to augment the department’s Dikgerekgere Programme, with teams patching potholes while road rehabilitation work continues in phases. “We are addressing the most urgent issues on this road, especially given the heavy traffic it handles daily,” said Rachoene.

While the D4 is receiving immediate attention, Rachoene said plans are afoot for more extensive road rehabilitation to address damage. “This road has been in the news for quite some time due to its condition, and we’re here to fix it,” he stated.

Rachoene also reassured the community that their concerns have been heard. “This road, in particular, has been troublesome due to the heavy flow of trucks. But we’re working hard to resolve this issue,” he said, adding that the department has a database of all roads in the province to identify and address varying levels of damage.
