The Mpumalanga MEC for public works, roads and transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, recently toured the hospital to assess the progress.
The Mpumalanga MEC for public works, roads and transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, and a departmental team recently undertook a comprehensive tour of the various infrastructure projects implemented by the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport (DPWRT) in Bushbuckridge.
During the visit, Thomo assessed the progress of ongoing projects and infrastructure development initiatives. This included the new Mapulaneng Regional Hospital, which is under construction. It is a mega infrastructure project under way in the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality. This modern 365-bed facility is being implemented as a multiyear project in phases, which will include advanced facilities along with extensive external works. The project is being undertaken on behalf of the provincial Department of Health (DoH).
Last year, the DPWRT’s spokesperson, Bongani Dhlamini, told the newspaper that the construction had started soon after the hard lockdown in June 2020, on a five-year period. “Thus, completion is expected in 2025, provided that budget allocations to the project are aligned to the contract values. The construction of the new Mapulaneng Regional Hospital includes all clinical and non-clinical facilities such as an outpatient department, casualty buildings, emergency medical services building, an isolation ward, a surgical orthopaedical ward, residential building and others,” said Dhlamini.
The project serves as a reflection of our capacity to implement large-scale social and capital infrastructure initiatives that bring meaningful benefits to our communities,” said Thomo. “It is essential for me to practically see the progress of our projects and engage with the communities they serve. This visit will enable me to better understand the challenges faced by the project teams and identify areas where we can improve our service delivery.”
Thomo said mega infrastructure projects of this scale are not just about meeting immediate needs, but lays the foundation for sustainable economic spin-offs and positive multiplier effects that will benefit the surrounding communities around Bushbuckridge Local Municipality.
Dhlamini said the community of Bushbuckridge can expect world-class health services. “As soon as it is completed, the hospital will be handed over to the DoH.”
