Road rehabilitation and projects nearing completion were on the agenda.

Umdoni Municipality mayor Sibongile Khathi provided an in-depth service delivery update which highlighted projects dealing with sports grounds, community halls and roads at a media briefing held at council chambers in Scottburgh last week.

The following projects are at various stages of construction: Mthobisi-Mbutho Road in Ward 17 – 75%, Gumede Bridge in Ward 16 – 30%, re-gravelling of Langa Road in Ward 11 – 30%, Nkampula Sports Field in Ward 3 – 75%, Mayfield Community Hall in Ward 5 – 80% and Dlangezwa Community Hall in Ward 18 – 75%.

Mayor Khathi stated that Umdoni has commenced work to fulfil its urban road redemption mission to ensure that the road network is on par with the standards of urban areas.

“The municipality has assessed over 50 urban roads and a portion of them plus a portion of rural roads will undergo rehabilitation aided by the R48-m road rehabilitation programme approved by council,” she said.

Several roads in Scottburgh have already been repaired. Locals have been complaining about the state of Park Rynie roads, and when questioned, mayor Khathi said that these roads should be looked at in about two weeks.

Other planned projects for the current financial year include construction of the Madlalathi Community Hall (Ward 2), Mgangeni Community Hall (Ward 4), construction of Smolo Road (Ward 9), re-gravelling of Myeza Road (Ward 14) and upgrading of Umzinto Sport Field (Ward 13).

The mayor added that councillors through their portfolio committees will continue to play their oversight role to ensure projects are duly implemented and completed within the contracted period.

Mayor Khathi also reminded everyone of some of the municipality’s achievements which included the attainment of an Unqualified Audit Opinion for the 2020/21 fiscal year, the four-month employment programme of 394 young people through the MISA programme and the completion of four capital projects which included the KwaLembe Sports Field in Ward 1, Mbungulu Community Hall in Ward 6, Textile Road in Ward 13 and Bhadane Sports Field in Ward 4.
