After the frustration caused by the recent roadworks on Old Howick Road, motorists have expressed relief and satisfaction at its completion and having all the potholes filled.
The R103, which connects Hilton to Pietermaritzburg, underwent repairs earlier this month, with slabs cut out on both lanes to repair the pothole-ridden road.
During the roadworks, motorists raised concerns about increased dangers, including swerving and sudden braking, which led to a rear-end collision.
Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Ntobeko Mkhize confirmed the repairs were now complete. “This initiative is just one of many currently underway in the city as we prioritise addressing potholes along major routes to enhance traffic flow and safety,” Mkhize said.
She added that teams had been working “diligently to tackle the backlog” in pothole repairs and aimed to work as swiftly as possible.
Mkhize noted that weather disruptions, such as rain, often caused delays but assured motorists that teams were working around the clock to minimise these interruptions.
To address these challenges, the municipality has increased its road maintenance budget to ensure sufficient resources are allocated to key projects.
Morcom Road resident Brett Teichmann praised the municipality’s efforts. “I have to give credit where it’s due.
“The department works a lot better than the water department, and the teams are working hard. They’ve addressed areas that were falling apart, like Taunton Road, Old Howick and even smaller areas like Bridge Road,” Teichmann said.
Motorist Lara Gibson, who uses Old Howick Road as an alternative to the N3, commended the stop-and-go system during the repairs and welcomed the improvements.
Before the completion, the stop-and-gos were very helpful. The drive to work is now easier, though my concern is the possibility of falling trees or mudslides with the rainy weather
Mkhize urged motorists to remain patient and respectful to workers. “Unfortunately, there have been reports of employees facing insults while on duty, which is unacceptable. The municipality appeals to residents to work together, respect road safety rules, and report potholes to the Call Centre to aid in the repair process.”
