'Once complete, the existing Mediclinic George and Geneva hospital facilities will be fully vacated.'

GEORGE NEWS - The move of Mediclinic George and Geneva to its new hospital building has been extended from December 2025 to April 2026.

Hospital general manager Celesté Louw said this is to ensure that every aspect of this state-of-the-art facility meets the highest standards.

"We are currently in the detailed planning phase for the move, which is a substantial project in itself and is expected to take four to six weeks.

"The new hospital will open in phases to ensure a smooth transition of services. Once complete, the existing Mediclinic George and Geneva hospital services will be fully vacated.

"We will share a more detailed plan with the community in the coming year and will provide regular updates on the hospital's progress to keep everyone informed."

The need for expansion of the Mediclinic facilities is due to the fast population growth of George and surrounding areas.

Louw said the hospital will feature 222 beds and 13 theatres and will offer all the services and facilities currently provided by Mediclinic George and Geneva.

"Expanded services include a 20-bed day hospital with three theatres, as well as a dedicated cardiothoracic theatre, catheterisation lab, vascular theatre, and a cardiology unit, all integrated into the main hospital building."

It is now 10 years since the development application was launched. The initial application, on the sawmill land next to the Outeniqua Family Market, was rejected due to it being located outside the urban edge and undesirable in terms of the city's spatial development plan.

Mediclinic then invested in one of the alternative properties that was available, in York Street. Construction started in September 2023 after a new, lengthy application process.

The new hospital will cost over R1bn.
