A new 96ha township is being proposed for Rietfontein.

According to the draft scoping report for the Bokokotla Motshabo mixed use development, a township with residential, educational, offices and business uses is being proposed. The development will include 223 erven on the 96ha property, and will include a shopping centre, fuel station, offices, medical consulting rooms and a waste water treatment plant.

The site is situated 6km east of Hartbeespoort and 800m south of the Magaliesberg Mountain ridge on both sides of the R514 (Van der Hoff Road).

It is proposed that the development will receive water from the Zilkaatsnek reservoir which feeds Refentse and Sunway. The proposed development proposes the construction of a 1.64MLD Wastewater Treatment Plant (Sewage Package Plant) on the southern boundary, to accommodate the development in the interim until the Rietfontein plant is upgraded. This plant will service both sides of the development, north and south of the R514.

The developer has applied to the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism for environmental authorisation for the development.

A notice of the Environmental Impact Assessment process was published on 7 September, giving residents 40 days to register as interested and affected parties.
