The state-of-the-art taxi rank promises to transform daily commuting and support local economic growth.

The bustling community of Centocow near Bulwer celebrated the official opening of its modern new taxi rank on Tuesday, a project undertaken by the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality.

The state-of-the-art facility promises to transform daily commuting and support local economic growth.

The construction of the taxi rank had been a hive of activity for months. Bulldozers, graders, and diggers worked tirelessly to prepare the site, while the sight of workmen in blue overalls became a familiar scene. Now, the project was completed, unveiling a facility equipped with business stalls, a park, parking bays, a boardroom, and an ablution block.

Addressing the crowd at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mayor Sindisiwe Msomi pointed out the vital role the taxi industry plays in the community and local economy.

“You are at the heart of our economy,” she told taxi owners and association members.

This facility was designed with vision and purpose. It is more than just a rank; it is a hub connecting our people to towns, villages, and opportunities.

The mayor also stressed the municipality’s commitment to improving transport infrastructure, noting its importance in driving economic growth and social development.

“Safe and reliable transport infrastructure is essential for goods and people to move efficiently, which directly impacts our economy.”

Deputy Mayor Kholeka Hadebe echoed these sentiments, stating that the project is part of broader efforts to modernise transport infrastructure across the municipality.

She called for continued focus on complementary initiatives to ensure a transport system that meets the needs of all citizens.

The secretary of the local taxi association, Sifiso Phakathi, expressed gratitude to the municipality, “This facility represents progress for our community, and we are committed to making it a success.”

The new Centocow Taxi Rank has already had a flurry of activity, with commuters, vendors, and drivers embracing the upgraded space. This project was seen as a significant step in the municipality’s mission to build better communities through collaboration and development.
