The purpose of the programme is to assist up-and-coming companies to compete legitimately for projects and tenders.

A six-month programme aimed at training 11 emerging construction and subcontracting companies in the iLembe region was launched on Tuesday.

The initiative by the iLembe Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Balwin Foundation, Saryx Engineering and Engie Peakers Operations, will run until October.

iLembe Chamber CEO Cobus Oelofse said the construction industry was a challenging sector, where extortion and intimidation were rife.

The purpose of the programme is to assist up-and-coming companies to compete legitimately for projects and tenders.

Participants will receive training on topics such as applying health and safety regulations in work areas, implementing quality principles on construction sites, learning basic business finance skills, managing construction resources, setting up and managing a construction business, as well as reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications.

They will be guided on how to tender for construction contracts.
