The community of KwaNzimakwe has been waiting for this road project since 2014.

The leader of the KwaNzimakwe Traditional Council, Inkosi Bhekizizwe Nzimakwe, said he hopes the R139m allocated for the construction of road D1097 in Thongasi will be used for what it is intended for.

Inkosi Nzimakwe was speaking at a sod-turning ceremony on Tuesday last week.

He said the community of KwaNzimakwe has been waiting for this project since 2014.

The sod-turning ceremony was led by the KZN MEC for Transport, Siboniso Duma.

Duma also introduced the contractor in charge of the construction to the community.

The MEC said the R139m project will connect Wards 1 and 10 in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM).

“This project has been in the pipeline for years. Concerns regarding this road were raised in 2014. We are introducing the contractor for the rehabilitation of D1097; when we do such projects, 30% of the work is set aside to benefit women, youth, and the physically challenged. He said smaller contractors will also benefit from the project,” he said.

Duma added that Inkosi Nzimakwe welcomed the project.

The MEC said the construction would ease the burden on community members and road users.

He described the road as a corridor that leads to the N2 and the beach.

RNM mayor Zodwa Mzindle said it has been a long time coming.

“We are very grateful to the Department of Transport. We urge community members to work with us and be patient. As the municipality and councillors, we are here to deliver services,” she said.

She added that it would be disheartening if such services were not delivered because of trivial matters.

Mzindle said that with this project, a number of people will be employed.
