The municipality said the library will help and support students and all people who love to read.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport, Arts and Culture MEC, Amanda Bani-Mapena, recently handed over a library construction site to the contractor and project manager in Ward 18 under Umzumbe Municipality.

Bani-Mapena said the library is worth R38 million and the construction was marked with a symbolic sod-turning exercise, and is expected to be completed in June 2024.

The Umzumbe Library located at the Nkanini Sports Grounds will be a first for the municipality.

The MEC said on completion the library will boast high speed internet connectivity with 10-15 computers for public use, a fitted kitchen, workroom, foyer with display cabinets, and group activities room.

She added that the facility will not only serve the surrounding schools, but communities from various wards in Umzumbe Municipality

During the sod-turning event, MEC Bani-Mapena was accompanied by the mayor of Umzumbe, Bongani Nyuswa, deputy mayor, Mhlengi Luthuli, Speaker of Umzumbe Council, Sbonelo Maphumulo, and all councillors.

The municipality said the library will help and support students and all people who love to read.

Congratulating the people of Umzumbe, mayor Bongani Nyuswa, said this kind of development for the people of Umzumbe gives the municipality great joy.

“I want to point out that it is a successful nation that prioritises education,” said Nyuswa before asking the community to take care of the building so it would not be exploited by criminals.

Meanwhile, during Bani-Mapena’s visit to Umzumbe, the MEC visited two schools, a primary and a high school, to monitor school re-opening.

The MEC then donated sports kits and music instruments to the two local schools.

She also visited 10 indigent families to donate food parcels.

“The things we see in urban areas and in cities, we want to see them in rural areas,” said Bani-Mapena.
