DANIELSKUIL residents can now enjoy improved road safety, access and infrastructure following the successful completion and handover of the MacKenzie Road upgrade project by Petra Diamonds’ Finsch Diamond Mine (FDM).
The project, valued at R6.2 million, was carried out as part of FDM’s Social and Labour Plan commitments and addresses key priorities outlined in the Kgatelopele Local Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan.
The upgrade covers an 800-metre stretch of MacKenzie Road and includes the installation of 19 speed humps across Johanna van der Merwe, Landbou, Pela, and Tau streets. These enhancements are designed to improve road safety and reduce traffic hazards, aligning with Petra Diamonds’ goal of fostering safer communities and supporting sustainable development.
FDM’s operations executive, Jaison Rajan, highlighted the project’s impact, saying, “At Petra, we believe in creating abundance from rarity. This road upgrade and installation of safety measures reflect our dedication to transforming the communities we serve, contributing to the long-term prosperity of Danielskuil. Safety is paramount in our operations and community initiatives, and we are proud to support infrastructure that will benefit residents for years to come.”
In addition to improving infrastructure, the project generated 24 temporary employment opportunities and involved partnerships with two local subcontractors, as part of FDM’s commitment to local economic empowerment and community involvement.
The handover ceremony was attended by notable figures, including the executive mayor of Kgatelopele Local Municipality, Irene Williams, alongside representatives from project partners MVD Kalahari Consulting Engineers and Taanil Construction.
FDM expressed gratitude to Kgatelopele Municipality, project partners, and the community for their support in making the project a reality.
It noted that this collaboration marks a significant step toward a safer and more sustainable future for Danielskuil.
