The Klipfontein Dam Project has been earmarked for R500 million to raise the dam, which will benefit thousands of people in the district. Zululand District Municipality Mayor Michael Khumalo recently welcomed and applauded the unveiling of the funds. Klipfontein Dam is situated in the upper reaches of the White Mfolozi River and provides water to Vryheid and Ulundi.

“It has been my concern that the population in the district is constantly growing, but the infrastructure remains the same. This tremendous project comes at the right time to address water shortages and with the construction of a shopping mall in AbaQulusi. We were concerned that most communities near the dam still lack water,” remarked the mayor.

Furthermore, the mayor conveyed gratitude to the Department of Water & Sanitation, along with other key project participants. The project is expected to create job opportunities, boost local economic development and foster skills development. The present 18 million cubic metres of the dam capacity will be increased to 28 million cubic metres.
