The rebuild of Coedmore bridge was hit with a slight delay as the workers were not able fill the deck and do the final pour.

THE long-awaited reconstruction of the Coedmore bridge has been hit by yet another slight delay, as confirmed by ward 64 councillor Gavin Hegter.

Hegter said work on Coedmore bridge resumed after the festive season on January 8.

“Unfortunately, they just ran out of time, so they were unable to do the pour of the deck,” said Hegter. He added this will likely push the completion date further back, though a revised date has not been supplied.

Sub-contractor Afrostructures (Pty) Ltd, sub-contracted for the project by Leek Construction cc, continued to commit themselves to completing the work. “I will continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure any additional delays are minimised,” Hegter added.

The Coedmore bridge suffered severe damage in the 2022 floods and motorists have had to use diversion routes that take as long as 45 minutes to navigate. The eThekwini Municipality allocated R48 million for the rehabilitation of the two-lane 90m bridge with pedestrian walkways. The funding was made possible by the National Treasury’s Municipal Disaster Response Grant.

eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Mduduzi Ncalane, moved to allay fears, reassuring residents that they were making headway.

“The contract between Leek Construction cc and eThekwini Municipality for the construction of the Coedmore Road bridge and roadworks is still ongoing. Leek Construction cc has sub-contracted a part of the job to Afrostructures, as permissible in the contract,” said Ncalane.
