Overview: Sanral Announces Alternative Routes Amid N3 Closures

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) is a pivotal institution responsible for the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and management of South Africa’s national road network. By ensuring that the roads are safe and accessible for all users, Sanral plays a critical role in supporting the country’s economic growth and improving transportation safety. Recently, Sanral announced the upcoming installation of a temporary pedestrian bridge over the N3 at Rockdale Road, which will necessitate significant road closures.

Reason Behind the N3 Closures

This closure is a vital safety measure. The existing Rockdale Bridge was demolished at the end of August 2024, creating an urgent need for a temporary solution to ensure safe pedestrian access between Chesterville and Westville. According to Sanral Eastern Region project engineer Corné Roux, the installation of the temporary bridge will facilitate safe crossing for pedestrians, particularly those commuting between these two areas. Roux emphasized the importance of pedestrian safety as a core mission of Sanral, highlighting this installation as part of a broader commitment to improving road safety for all users.

Details of the Road Closures

The planned closures on the N3 are structured as follows:

N3 Eastbound Lane Closure:

  • Begins at 8 PM on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, and concludes at 12 AM on Thursday, October 31, 2024.

N3 Westbound Lane Closure:

  • Takes effect at 12 AM on Thursday, October 31, 2024, and ends at 4 AM on the same day.

These closures will be executed sequentially, first affecting the eastbound carriageway followed by the westbound lane later that evening.

Alternative Routes for Motorists

Given these closures, Sanral has outlined alternative routes to help motorists navigate around the affected areas:

For N3 Eastbound (Pinetown to Durban):

  • Closure Points: The N3 eastbound will be fully closed at the St James Avenue/Harry Gwala Road Interchange.
  • Open Routes: Motorists can still access the off-ramp to Westville and Pavilion Shopping Centre.
  • Closed Routes: The St James Avenue loop ramp from Pavilion to Durban will be closed, along with the left slip from Westville to Durban.

For N3 Westbound (Durban to Pinetown):

  • Closure Points: The N3 westbound will be fully closed at the EB Cloete Interchange (commonly known as Spaghetti Junction).
  • Open Routes: Motorists will only be able to proceed to the N2 north or south.
  • Closed Routes: The N2 northbound off-ramp from eManzimtoti to Pinetown will be closed, along with the N2 southbound off-ramp from Umhlanga Rocks to Pinetown.
