UPDATE: Rondebult Road Sinkholes to be fixed

The city has developed plans for the sinkholes to be closed soon.

The stretch of Rondebult Road in Boksburg is identified as one of the major roads that plays a critical role in the city’s economy by enabling the transportation of goods and services, and the movement of people, particularly the workforce, travelling between major industries and the country’s economic hub.

However, the local government has, for almost two years, been battling to fix the sinkhole-damaged stretch of the road in Comet.

As things stand, the stretch of road and alternative routes in the areas around the sinkhole-damaged section of Rondebult Road become what resembles a parking lot during peak hours, subsequently impacting the city’s economic well-being.

Responding to questions about the impact of the road closure, the city manager Dr Imogen Mashazi blamed the situation on mining activities, saying Ekurhuleni has been a mining hub for quite some time and most of the sinkholes that open up in different parts of the city are a result of mining.

“Mining, in general, is not the responsibility of the city, it’s a responsibility of the Department of Mineral and Energy (DMRE), which is supposed to be helping us to close those sinkholes and the disused mines.

“However, as a responsive city, we did set aside money which was then spent on investigating how the affected road could be fixed.

“A budget has been set aside, and we have developed plans for the sinkholes to be closed soon.

“It’s not like we are not doing anything. We have been working on addressing the problem. Studies have been made on how to close the sinkholes. We are working with the Department of Energy towards the desired goal.”
