The Mpumalanga MEC for roads, Thulasizwe Thomo, announced the upgrade of the road that will ease the traffic volumes.
The Mpumalanga MEC for public works, roads and transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, has announced the commencement of one of the most anticipated road upgrades in Dludluma, Nkomazi.
When he assumed office a little over three months ago, Thomo addressed this matter as an immediate priority.
He and other dignitaries, such as the Nkomazi Local Municipality’s executive mayor, Phindile Magagula, conducted a ceremonial sod-turning for the upgrade of the D2950 from the D797 towards the ring road in Dludluma. He said the construction will start soon.
“The existing condition of this road has been deteriorating overtime and is no longer coping with the increased traffic volume in the area. The road serves as a critical access point to various amenities within Dludluma Village as well as being the primary bus route for commuters. We are pleased to finally deliver this project and appreciate the positive response from the community. Furthermore, employment opportunities will be generated for local beneficiaries as part of this project,” he said.
Community members in Dludluma had raised concerns over this and other dilapidated roads on various occasions.
Last year, this publication reported that some community members were stranded as roads in the area were flooded due to the heavy rain. The main road from Ngwenyeni Village, which is gravel, was destroyed by the heavy rainfall in February 2023.
According to some locals, commuters had been unable to get to Dludluma Clinic, Mbombo Combined School and other surrounding areas due to the damaged roads. Although the Nkomazi Local Municipality would usually grade the roads, community members said it was not enough during protests dating back to 2017.
