The R3.9 billion project outside Vereeniging is expected to bring an end to Gauteng's water woes and provide potable water to 2.4 million people.

The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina, visited the Zuikerbosch Water Purification Works, located just outside Vereeniging in Gauteng on Tuesday.

The visit was part of National Water Month celebrations, marking an important milestone for South Africa’s water security.

Majodina was joined by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and other dignitaries to oversee the progress of the R3.9 billion upgrade to the plant.

The project, once completed, will increase Rand Water’s capacity by an additional 1,200 million litres per day, helping to secure water supply for the growing population of Gauteng.

It is expected to serve an additional 2.4 million people, providing each individual with 250 litres of potable water daily.

In her address, Minister Majodina highlighted that this upgrade would create the largest state-of-the-art water purification facility in Africa, becoming a cornerstone of Rand Water’s infrastructure.

The project will ensure reliable water delivery to Johannesburg, Pretoria, and other major cities in the province.

Although media members were prohibited from taking pictures due to the site’s national key point status, satellite images shared online reveal the scale of the construction.

Premier Lesufi, visibly impressed with the project’s progress, described it as a “new Jerusalem,” a symbol of hope for the people of Gauteng. The project’s successful completion promises to enhance water security for millions of South Africans in the years to come.
